Man walking in snow

Of all the things we can think of that stain our clothes- wine, coffee, cooking oils, or even blood– salt probably doesn’t come to mind. But the truth is that salt residue from icy roads or driveways can do a number on our pants, especially denim jeans. Salt stains, or snow stains, aren’t the easiest to remove; the dusty residue is quite a pain to remove and could take a couple of tries before you’re able to see a difference. Here are some tips for removing salt stains from your pants.

Always Check the Cleaning Labels

Before you attempt to remove a salt stain, or any stain, from a garment, make sure you read the label carefully. Certain materials shouldn’t be washed in high temperatures or be treated with stain removers or chemicals or bleach. Check your pants’ cleaning label before beginning any DIY stain removal.

The Vinegar Method

Some salt stains can be treated with a simple vinegar solution you can make at home. To try this method, you’ll need:

  • Distilled White Vinegar
  • Laundry Detergent
  • Soft Bristled Brush

Once you have the necessary materials, follow these steps:

  1. Rinse the salt-covered area of the pants in cold water.
  2. Use the brush to scrub off any solid particles of salt that the water didn’t’ dissolve.
  3. Wash your pants in the washing machine using your regular detergent and usual washing cycle.
  4. Once the pants have been washed, use a solution of 1 tablespoon of vinegar to one quart of water and apply with a damp cloth.
  5. After blotting the salt stains with the vinegar-soaked cloth, wash again in the washing machine.
